"Walters has crafted a poignant narrative depicting the profound connection between humans and other living creatures on this planet. Highly recommended for a wide readership."―Starred review from School Library Journal
Living on a secluded island in the Pacific Northwest with his parents, Dylan finds himself alone when they have to leave for the mainland. To his delight, his grandfather braves a storm to come and stay with him. Alongside a selection of gifts, Grandpa gives Dylan a particularly practical item that proves to be invaluable the next day during their coastal exploration. This gift ultimately leads them to a startling discovery: a young orca stranded on the rocks following the fierce storm.
With time ticking away as the sun beats down, Dylan and Grandpa must collaborate in order to devise a plan to rescue the calf while its pod lingers nearby in concern. Racing against the elements, the duo face a race against time to save the stranded orca and reunite it with its family before it's too late.
